The earliest written reference of poker was found in the writings of Jonathan H. Green in 1834. He referred to it as the ‘cheating game’.

But when he realized that his was the only documentary evidence of poker, he chose to give it the name ‘poker’. The origin of the word ‘poker’ is contradictory. Some say that is has been derived from the French ‘poque’ or the German ‘pochen’. Some even say that it has been derived from the Indian word ‘pukka’. Another possible explanation is that the word has been derived from the slang word ‘poke’, a term used for pickpockets. In spite of the uncertainty of it’s origins it cannot be denied that poker is one of the most widely played card games in the world.
